What is Juneteenth?
The day marks June 19, 1865. The day when over two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation and two months after Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed. The date is why most historians mark 1865 as the “end of slavery.”
